How to Wear a Cape

My first thought when capes became stylish was, ‘wtf is a cape?’ The thought of me strolling down the street with a cape tied around my neck blowing in the breeze, arms extended like superman, and then suddenly taking flight didn’t seem quite right.

Today, the term “cape” usually refers to the structure of a garment’s sleeves. Think half poncho, half blazer. You get that chic, fashionable I’m too cool to put my arms in my sleeves look without the jacket falling off constantly.  Since this poncho/blazer hybrid is relatively new to the fashion scene, I thought I’d give you some tips on how to wear a cape!

1. Pair with Proper Proportions

A cape is typically more voluminous compared to the average blazer or jacket. When styling your cape, let it be the statement piece and contrast the volume by wearing a more form fitting blouse, jumpsuit, or dress underneath. If you’re all about a statement, focus other voluminous accents away from your torso. You could totally rock a cape with a wide leg pant since the volume is far from the cape.

2. Dress it up or down

Capes are so versatile! They can easily go from a business meeting to happy hour. Dress down the cape with distressed jeans (like I did) or enhance the professionalism of the cape with trousers and a structured blouse. I’m already excited to restyle my cape with a vintage tee on the weekend or a pencil skirt at work.

3. Accessorize Properly

Since a cape has such a unique structure, it’s important to choose the right accessories. Since the shoulders of the cape are not as secured because of the lack of sleeves, be careful wearing heavy, statement necklaces. Heavy accessories could cause your cape to slip off your shoulders. Also, it’s tough to balance a shoulder strap when your arm can’t necessarily hold it up. Opt for a delicate handbag or clutch rather than a shoulder tote.

4. Be confident!

The cape is a gorgeous piece that’s not meant for slumped shoulders or folded arms.  Capes can be worn on every body type and instantly makes you look pulled together and elegant. Stand tall, smile, and the cape will do the rest of the work!
