How to Build a Unique Wardrobe in a Trendy World

Creating a unique wardrobe can be a real challenge these days. We try and be fashion forward by purchasing the latest trend that no one is wearing. 2 weeks later, it’s hanging on every mannequin and you’re suddenly outshined. So, you swing the other way and go for investing in basics. Then your bored and blending in with a crowd of white tees and jeans. How can we find the balance? Today, I’m giving you my tips for creating a unique wardrobe that defies blending in.

Don’t over invest in trends

I love sporting the latest trend but I’m careful not to invest all my money on trendy items. Trendy items are unique for a second but often become overdone. Rock the trends you love, but consider their longevity before throwing down your credit card.

Get the fit right

I don’t care if you’re a wearing jeans a plain T-shirt, if they fit your body well, you’ll stand out from anyone else wearing a similar outfit. A good fitting outfit dominates any “basic” (I don’t really like that word) outfit and even trends too!

Look for special details

I’ve been looking for flat Chelsea boots for some time and stumbled upon these Louise et Cie Pearl Embellished Booties in Nordstrom Rack. I first thought, aren’t the pearls a little “extra?” That thought was quickly silenced and the pearls gave my boots the extra unique touch that enhances every outfit I wear with them.

Shop vintage and consignment

You know I love consignment and vintage shopping. It’s the best way to find pieces that are one of a kind and will add that personal touch to your outfit. Plus a backstory about clothing items always makes things more personal and interesting.

Let your hair and makeup speak

Sure it’s not your wardrobe, but your makeup and hair can definitely keep your look from blending in.  A red lip, blue liner, or blunt bob  (my current fave 😉) can make you stand out more and give off that “signature” look.

Find special pieces to accessorize

Take a simple outfit, like my yellow sweater and denim jeans, and add some accessories to kick it up a notch. A crossbody covered in bright butterflies (and one spider…seriously why did they have to do that?!) and a Gucci-esque belt made this look really feel like mine.

If you love it, wear it!

And finally, we love fashion and there are no rules. If you love it, wear it! Chances are your confidence will shine through and that’s what is going to make you stand out above all.
