5 Tips for Buying New Sunglasses

As some of you know, I used to work at Nordstrom in the sunglasses department. While I was slinging Gucci, Tom Ford, and Chanel shades, I picked up a ridiculous amount of knowledge about sunglasses. Since it’s that time of year, I’m going to share 5 tips you should know when buying a new pair of summertime sunnies!

1. Do Your Research

Now I already know you fashionistas out there do research before making purchases. I mean, how else would we find those silver, mirrored sunglasses Rihanna wears? Before buying sunglasses, check out how customers like their purchase and the stores in your area with the lowest price. This could eliminate half your problems before you even go to the store.

2. Bring a Friend

It’s so hard to tell what you look like in sunglasses when they’re on your face and you’re looking through a dark lens. I highly suggest bringing a friend to give you an objective opinion about which sunglasses make you look more or less like Beyoncé. If your shopping advisor can’t make it, take a selfie! Don’t be ashamed, it really works.

3. Understand the Lens Quality

The most important part of sunglasses are the lenses! No, it’s not the shiny Valentino logo or the fact that you look like a celebrity. Ask the salesperson about UV protection, lens material, polarization, and any other noteworthy features. For example, lenses that are glass are more likely to break or scratch than those that are plastic. Polarization doesn’t increase sun protection but rather helps decrease the sun’s glare. These details will ultimately define what you need in a sunglass and your overall satisfaction with the product.

4. Ask about Warranty and Repairs

Lord knows I will probably sit on my sunglasses and need to fix them. Before you invest in designer shades, ask about the brand’s warranty and repair policy. It’s important to know what to do if the pearl falls off your Chanel sunglasses or *gasp* your dog chews up your Fendi aviators. Be aware if the brand will repair broken lenses, replace missing parts or replace your sunglasses entirely.

5. Learn Post Purchase Care

Your flat top Celine Shadows are only going to last so long if you don’t know how to take care of them. Ask the salesperson about post purchase care. Did you know putting sunglasses on your head can stretch them out beyond repair? Or consistently taking your sunglasses off with one hand can make them lopsided? I didn’t either. Learn the facts before you double your sunnies as a headband.

The last step you ask?

Grab your favorite outfit and rock your sunglasses, stunner shades, hater blockers, sunnies…it doesn’t matter what you call them ’cause you look good.

  1. My wife just broke her sunglasses, and I was thinking about buying her a new pair as a surprise. I think it’s a great idea to ask about warranty and repair policy. I know that this won’t be the first time they will break, but it would be nice to be able to get them fixed.

    1. Thanks Gregory! I’m so happy to hear that this post will help you out. Warranties are super important and can really make a difference if you’re going to spend a couple hundred dollars on a pair.
